2:30PM-Soccer: France OR Mexico

As the World Cup cycles back around for everyone’s second games, the gridlock of draws in Group A was partially resolved Wednesday afternoon as Uruguay made their mark on South African soil by walloping the host nation.  France and Mexico know that a win now will go a very long way in advancing to the elimination round of 16.  Both teams need a win so the question remaining will be whether or not France will prove itself worthy of a top seed or will the upset minded Mexicans continue the trend of lower seeds winning in South Africa?

  • France is ranked 9th in the FIFA world rankings
  • Mexico is ranked 17th in the FIFA world rankings
  • France managed 4 wins and 3 draws in qualifying
  • Mexico managed 5 wins, a draw, and a loss in qualifying
  • France has +130 odds to win the match
  • Mexico win/draw has -150 odds

Tonto picks Mexico to win/draw * * (2 out of 5 stars)

The easy pick is draw just based on the lack of scoring after all 32 teams have played their first games.  Only 3 teams managed 2 or more goals in their first game (Uruguay did it in their second) meaning that if Mexico scores it is unlikely that France will win.  France entered with a lack of goal scoring the apparent weakness in the team, and I don’t see that getting resolved in this one.
